I ask my good friend and professional finisher Brian Miller to shoot a video that is slightly out of the box using mix medium. There seems to be a trend among woodworkers incorporating metal and other mediums into their work. Here Brian shows how finishing can be part of the design. He also shares generously many of his tips and tricks.

I’m a brand new woodworker. Getting to within a thousandth of an inch does not seem achievable at this point. I don’t have fancy gauges to be measuring that precisely.
Sorry but you will always get a bad apple you are doing a great job keep going 👍
I found your five cut method very interesting - and now I’m watching the two cut. It doesn’t matter whether your are in it for precision, the hobby or to have fun - somebody presents something and you look at it and decide if you want to use it or not - and leave it at that. people are weird! They must not have a life if they gripe about somebody’s methodology that they can either take her leave anyway.
Sir, it took me two years to find this post of yours! Thank you.
Good job on the jig and video, thanks for not putting up with the Complainer’s! Those who can teach, 8:25 8:25 while those who can’t whine and find fault. Thank You!
I can't afford to take another hit! LMAO
good, but I'd like to see how the sled is put together.
12 years later and this is still the industry standard in making the perfect cross cut sled
Excellent description. I like the what & why of the presentation. And I really appreciate the lack of the lengthy musical introduction so many others use.
My first box joint will happen this weekend. I’ve wanted to do one but always 🐓 out. I’ve watched this twice, probably once again before and during the box joint. Thanks your explanation was perfect!😊
Remember - it is the insecurity in us that lends credence to the slandering insecurity of others. Slander may hurt, but don't alter your work for them. Give weight to those you respect, and then to those who seem wise, and then to those who are constructive, and then to those who are just positive - and never to a slanderer. They cannot be given any gift or teaching, and silence will not help them either.
The fixture is great - but the process was even better. I see I was not the only one who was laughing out loud at the end. Thanks!
I really like the way you explain how to sharpen blades. But what is most impressing is that you don’t just give the steps to do so, you also show the possible thoughts in getting to the solution.
You are an incredible teacher. My knives have never been sharper. Thank you for all this knowledge.
Excellent method for trimming box joint tails. I made this for an old sears craftsman fence. It doesn't have ends, is very narrow. I stacked up multiple copies of the center piece all the way to the top and it works great. I really appreciate showing how to use the dial calipers to get precise results.
Since most of us have only one table saw (and barely enough space for that) 90% kind of sucks! :-). Thanks for the early morning smile!
I would like to purchase your push stick...how do I do this?
Like your video from Canada
People mad about math don't have enough gray matter to do math. Fun? I'll tell you what's "fun"; not screwing up a project and producing a great product. You could give away solid gold bricks. Someone will bitch that there's no embossing on it. Then you could emboss them and someone will bitch that it has embossing. You can't make people happy. If they can't handle math and straight-forward instruction they can go watch bourbonmoth or whatever. Shame it seems you've not put up a new video in 3 years, if I see things correctly.
Everyone who does woodworking videos has a video on this method of cutting/joining box sides. This, however, is the only video I've seen which covers it in-depth enough to be able to go set up a saw and cut production pieces instead a learning curve on a pile of scrap. Kind of sucks, huh? ;)
Very well done on the job and the video ahooting and production. Nice work!
I hope to meet some of you woodturners at the AAW symposium in Portland Oregon May 23 through the 26th 2024.
Excellent teacher.
A more economic, clear and faster approach would be to do the same procedure as the author has shown at 1:22, but instead of cutting across of a board, cut along. The resulting wedge will have longer side, which will magnify the error across its ends. If you don't want to cut along a board, just cut additional wedges like at 1:22 and place them touching each other edge. This will multiply the error accordingly (if you will not make a mistake by flipping wedges in the error-compensation direction).
Thank you William. I never considered working to such fine tollerances. Exciting.
It is a treat to watch you work!
I found your channel a few years ago and watched every video. I've always wanted to do woodworking but never took the plunge. Over the last year, I've built and helped with a few things; all out of necessity rather than an artistic creation. I'm about to take to dive-in, building out my workshop as tools are being shipped. And so here I am again, rewatching your videos. There is a lot of good content for woodworkers on RUclips. Much of it is more inspirational. As far as I'm concerned, what you have put out is essential to having a strong foundational knowledge, enabling an aspiring woodworker for growth. Thank you for putting it out and keeping your channel up. I hope to one day see you putting out more content. Even if it's a patreon type of thing, I'd immediately join up. Haven't done anything like that before, but I would, again, immediately jump aboard if you were to.
it seems there is a problem with this video. It freezes after 4 seconds
Grandpa and dad died before I could ask them how they got the sandpaper into these blocks so perfectly…
Your glee at the end was just wonderful! Love to see it. That plank was a thing of beauty.
Nasa project😅
Great video and instruction, as are all of your videos.
Your video is the singlemost intelligent one that I have watched, including your rationale for using a dado set over a router. I envy your table saw, set-up. Do you thin k it is possible to pursue the same tolerances using as DeWalt Contractor saw as well. Thoughts?
To do things in later life one cannot pass over what is learned in early life. Avoidance of learning will prevent your functions in later life. Dumbing down of education proves this where all the money in the world does not make it better, but this is the only thing political people have learned.
he is funny.... change your blade a couple times... kinda sucks .. dry humor
This is the most useful, educational RUclips woodworking video I have ever seen. Thanks for making it.
Great video. I used your box joint jig a couple of years ago and following your steps, it came out perfect the first try. Thanks for sharing
You are so brilliant and passionate about your work!! I couldn’t even imagine how much your students love you!! I’m subbed!!!
I thought this was supposed to be easy. My head hurts.
More info on how to determine what is the A side on the cut piece, to relate it back to the A side on the guide would be good.
I just got to the point where you calculated the error and then used a feeler gauge to shim the miter piece. I said out loud “I’ll be damned”. Math doesn’t scare me but my adhd will sometimes kick in and say “I don’t feel like figuring all that out right now. You rock dude.
so helpful, thanks!
This is the first time I looked up this guy in a few years, but I'm glad to find him again. I liked him right off the first time I watched his vids.
Thanks again for this! Has served me well all these years and I just used this method again on my sled.
I'm assuming that you're in the "machine room." Are you wearing SAFETY GLASSES, or are you wearing regular eyeglasses?
I gave my wife 3 of these for our anniversary and it didn't go over well. Could there be a design problem? Any suggestions will help.
Hi William, don't listen to the haters, i presume the maths would work the same in metric?
Yes, same principle
Thank you for putting this up. It was easy to follow and everything you say makes sense. I am glad you didn't listen to the haters and made the video about the miter sled. You are a good instructor and your students are lucky to have you.
Many thanks for sharing your experience 👍🏻
Absolutely enjoy your videos just fantastic!
